So You Want to Bring Your Music to FIGMENT...

Are you thinking of bringing your band, your DJ decks, your musical instruments to our September 29th event? Great! It’s not a festival without music in the air and we’ve hosted all manner of musical performances at Mosswood Park. Here is a list of our most frequently asked questions, along with some advice to set your performance up for success at FIGMENT Oakland 2018.   • What are the event hours?

 

The event runs from 10:00am-6:00pm Saturday September 29th with peak hours from 1:00pm-5:00pm.

 

  • Am I expected to perform the whole time?

 

No! Of course not! Let us know when and where you want to perform. No performance is too small or too short for us to feature.

 

  • Where can I perform?

 

Anywhere. Musical acts can be mobile, they can take place on the open field, they can take place on stages or in installations, and they can take place in the Mosswood Park amphitheater. Do note, the amphitheater will have power but we are NOT supplying speakers or a soundboard at this point in time. 

 

  • Is amplified sound okay?

 

Yes!

 

  • How loud can I be?

 

It takes a lot of different artists and projects to pull off a FIGMENT. Some of these projects make sound, and some of these projects require being away from sound. It’s okay to be loud, but make sure to discuss this with your curator so your project is appropriately placed.

 

  • Can I build or run a stage?

 

We’ve had several people build and curate their own accoustic and amplified stages at FIGMENT Oakland. If you want to propose a stage, you will be responsible for curating the stage and for supplying your own equipment, including speakers. Please email oaklandcuratorial@figmentproject.org for more information on how to curate a stage.

 

  • Can I DJ?

 

If you would like to DJ at FIGMENT, we would recommend getting together with friends to propose a project as a collective, and making your DJ area part of the proposal. If you want to propose a project that involves multiple DJs, you will be responsible for curating the group and for supplying your own equipment, including speakers. Please email oaklandcuratorial@figmentproject.org for more information on how to curate a DJ area.

 

  • Will there be a performance schedule?

 

Yes, we will be finalizing and publishing a performance schedule in mid September. If you’d like to be included, please make sure your project is submitted by September 1st. Do note, you do NOT need to be on the schedule to perform at FIGMENT Oakland, we simply cannot guarantee promotional help to acts not included on the schedule.

 

  • Can I sell CDs or hand out fliers?

 

We ask that you do not sell anything – including CDs – at FIGMENT as we are an entirely free and non-commercial event. We also ask that you please do not distribute fliers as we are trying to provide as waste-free an event as possible.

 

  • What is the crowd like?

 

We’re expecting several thousand people over the day, everyone from infants to the elderly, with most attendees in the “families with young children” demographic.

 

  • When does installation/deinstallation start?

 

If you’re installing a stage or performance structure, installation starts at 7am on the 29th and should be complete by 10am unless otherwise pre-arranged. Deinstallation starts at 6pm and should be complete by 8:00pm. If you’re just showing up and playing without a lot of infrastructure, this does not apply to you. Feel free to carry your equipment onto the field whenever you’re performing.

 

  • Can I drive on the field during install/deinstall?

 

Only installation artists are allowed to drive on the field during installation/deinstallation hours. Stages or performance structures are considered installations.

 

  • Is there a place to safely store equipment?

 

Yes, during the event we will have a place to store your equipment. Please do not store them in your vehicle.

 

  • Is there artist parking?

 

The Mosswood Park parking lot is reserved for FIGMENT artists on a first come, first serve basis. If you’re arriving while the event is in swing, it is unlikely that there will be room.

 

  • Can you provide volunteers?

 

You should plan to have your project fully staffed by your own team. This includes both volunteers to run your interaction and any needed to assure the safety of our attendees. We will have some volunteers on hand to help with installation and deinstallation, although this should be pre-arranged with your curator.   • Can you provide funding?

 

FIGMENT does NOT provide funding for the production, transportation, or insurance of works to, at, or from the park. FIGMENT encourages artists to apply for outside grants and fundraise for your project. Please note that no corporate sponsorship (including logos and credit lines) is permitted at the event, nor do we allow fundraising or sales at the event.

 

  • Can you provide transportation?

 

We will try to help artists pool transportation resources, but please be prepared to be self sufficient with your art.

 

  • Can you provide power?

 

Yes, but only if you pre-arrange it with your curator. Do note, if you want access to power, we need your project submitted by September 1st. After that, you are welcome to bring your own generator, although you will be responsible for its safety and gasoline needs.

 

  • Got any general advice?

 

Bring water and snacks. Wear comfy shoes. If you’re in the main field bring sunblock and maybe a parasol. Invite your friends to come. If you have one, bring a sign-up sheet for your mailing list. If you have upcoming shows let us know and we can help with your promotion. If you need help of any kind during the event, find anyone with a FIGMENT shirt on and we’ll do our best to find a solution.
